Last month I posted a couple snarky lines about using super suckers to clean up reef algae. I take it all back. Lo and behold, the super suckers seem to be having a positive effect on reef ecosystems in Hawaii. Apparently the suckers successfully filter out animals and the algae is used as fertilizer by local farmers. Once the bulk of the gunk is gone little fishies have enough breathing room to finish the job.
While this is encouraging news, the question still remains ... who's going to pay for all the super suckers we'll need to finish the job? Especially if they're in an MPA, where the government is under budgeted as it is and there's no profit motive for anyone else. Maybe the farmers can chip in for their fertilizer.
